I suppose living on Farms and Smallholdings we ate meat because it was there and not much choice in the matter. Aunt Mabel would say you and Billy go get some Rabbits Wood Pigeons or in season some game birds. I did learn to shoot a 22 Rifle at an early age and off we went carrying our next day or so dinners back to be hung cleaned and made ready for the pies. It was what we did and natural to us. Chickens were egg machines and had a season, they lived long lives, we kept Cock birds until Christmas the only time we ate chicken although it was mainly Goose for those times. Animal welfare was paramount as they were the income for the Farm. Today those animals and fowl do not live the long healthy lifestyle because of demand, if the demand was not there the rush from farm to table would not happen. Each of us make our own choice I disagree with the shortening of animal life span but do my bit buying meat from a local Butcher who only processes his meat from the local area which has lived a decent life span. If you go S.M. because it is cheap and easy then you get what you pay for. and I am afraid the fast food places with Burgers and Chicken are making life even worse for live stock. I could live on cheese apart from those smelly cheeses from France, give me Welsh Rarebit every time. Frank.
We eat meat but like it to be free range or organic and local. If we all gave up meat there'd be even more rare breeds. Very few people can afford to keep them just for the sake of their genes and history.

IMHO if the whole world turned vegan tomorrow, the following day almost every cow, pig, goat, sheep , chicken etc etc on the planet would be slaughtered.
And soon after that quite a lot of people would be suffering from malnutrition. Of course it's possible to live a very healthy life on a vegan diet, but you've really got to want to because it's not easy, especially if you have some common food allergies and can't eat (say) soybean or wheat. Even vegetarian can be tricky if you are lactose and wheat intolerant.

It gives the stomach ease;
It warms the bed on a frosty night,
And suffocates the fleas.
