  • Spent the morning picking dead moss (from the roof) out of the front garden, the birds toss it down when looking for wee beasties to munch.  This afternoon I planted a dozen plants, 6 mixed double petunias (no purple multifloras :( ....or is it grandiflora?) and half a dozen Cinerari 'silver dust'.  Only cost a fiver at local garage so I thought I might as well, they'll plug a little gap until I work out what I'm doing with it. :)

On a bad note, I think mummy great tit is deceased, expired, no more. :(  I now have a bird box with little baby great tits and no bird left to feed them (daddy blue tit hasn't been around for a while either).  All afternoon and early evening I've been listening to them cheeping in vain, I can even see their little beaks appearing at the hole cos they know that's where the food comes from.  I'm gutted, I was so looking forward to seeing them. I've been watching that box since February/March when they started checking it out and now it looks like both parents are ex great tits.  I'm hoping she has just wanted a wee afternoon off and will be back later, cos I'll be proper upset if they are all goners. :'(

Do you think I could collect creepy crawlies and worms and feed them through the little hole in front of the box? I don't even have a shoe box I could put them in and put them in the lobby press til they get bigger.

Worth trying and, if you can, pick off all the caterpillars and sawfly larvae and maybe even buy some fresh meal worms at the local pet and garden or fishing store.

Awe that's sad TBG. Try Obelixx's suggestion if the mum hasn't returned.

  • I may give that a wee go, thanks.

    I know it's nature, but.......ach.....they're MY birdies!!  :D
I feel responsible for them. :) I was half hoping my robins might take over and feed them, I've read somewhere that robins will do this, but they've not been around much......taken the hump cos my song thrush is my new favourite probably. haha

My only worry about feeding them is that they wouldn't know how to get out the box or find their own food if their mum isn't around to show them how.

At least they'll get out of the box and have a chance to let instinct take over.

    Morning all.
New coal face shift starts today. 7.30 - 2.30.
I'd have to admit that having more than 3 1/2 hours sleep might have been useful. Hey ho.

Drama in TBGs garden 😮. Hope your babies make it 🤞🏻 That’s what I like about Springwatch - its all happening on our doorsteps, you don’t have to go on a safari to see it for yourself.

Had another after work gardening spree - all waiting plants now in the borders. Feeling very virtuous 😇.  One more tonight should see all my toms 🍅  and cucumbers 🥒 in their final places too.  That leaves me free at the weekend to plant up the summer pots, and then I think I might have finally caught up with myself.  Its been a strange year for a weekend gardener - seems like everything had to be done all at once 😳.

For me, this year has been a good one.
The long slow Spring meant I wasn't in the usual "chasing my tail / missed the boat " mode. Pretty much everything got done at a nice pace and on time.
The relatively rain free last few weeks has helped a lot.

We were the opposite - seemed like winter went on til May, and then there was a mad rush to do everything in 4 weeks.   Although maybe the fact that I spent weekends gadding off to Paris/ Bham/Holland didn’t help  :o  B)

    Good morning all  :)
I'll never catch up ... there will always be things I'd planned to do ... seeds I'd planned to sow ... but this year I've done more by this time than in other years ... hopefully summer pots will be done this weekend (tomorrow we'll be going past a little GC that usually has some good offers on bedding) and then it should just be maintenance ... bug OH has just informed me that the pergola will be erected today ...more planting opportunities .... :D
