When Professor Sprout talked about her gardens at her houses that summed Chelsea up for me.
The other thing that gets on my wick is how the "garden" creators go on and on about the meaning behind their garden even if it is big blocks of concrete with a foxglove thrown in.
I will still watch it avidly though.
I agree, when Joe swift said how people would understand it when they were told about it's "concept", I thought sorry, it's a load of different concrete blocks with the odd plant. As an art installation yes, but as a garden, no.
I agree. To me it has to be somewhere I can relax, not look at the construction. Its a garden show , not a construction show. If it has to be explained to me, it has failed.

Yeah, the whole 'The polluting multi national company sponsored Penelope Winthrop-Claridge designed wearegreenhonestguv garden evokes memories of drinking sparkling evian water in the dusty gold mines of Africa, the large oversized band aid holding a broken tree stump together is emblematic of their disdain to Health & Safety and medical care afforded to employees......' is a bit of a nonsense, but like you I'll be watching it avidly cos they do have some lovely flowers on show.
Mind you, they have brought it down to earth and injected a wee bit of reality in to proceedings......the cottage garden thingy designed by a Yorkshireman had (as they proudly informed the viewing public) a cowpat specially brought in for the field area of the installation.
I'd love to visit it, I really would, you could go mad buying plants.
I think you are all missing the vital word, it is a SHOW. How often do fashion shows reflect what real people wear. The shows gardens are not supposed to look like what you might have as a garden.
How can you lie there and think of England When you don't even know who's in the team
I am in agreement with you punkdoc. The TV coverage is not a gardening programme but more of a catwalk of botanical fashion. I would be quite disappointed if time was taken up by demonstrations of lawnmowers or how to pot up a pelargonium.
@Punkdoc, l do agree with you, l know Chelsea isn't a flower/garden show in the conventional sense. I just get a bit frustrated by the artyfartyness sometimes!
I was looking forward to it and then Joe Swift appeared! Can't stand him, and then they Miriam Margolis was coming on was the final straw. I'll watch on Iplayer to avoid both.
It's very heavy on social issues and the meanings of gardens too. It seems like the flowers / plants are sidelined sometimes, replaced by discussions about how holes in concrete blocks represent human skin ...... I know these events need to evolve and change, but sometimes they lose sight of their original purpose - a FLOWER show 🌻🌼🌸🌹🌷
It’s a show, and a pretty good one at that. Really excited about my trip there tomorrow.
I’ve been a few times and always have a great day out. Don’t buy plants (don’t at Hampton Court very often either - the stress the poor things have been through to get them there makes me nervous for their futures 😉) but do buy seeds and pick up leaflets from the nursery stands who all do mail order these days.
Looking forward to seeing Mr Beardshaws efforts, and Tom S-S, plus the Artisan gardens normally have a few gems too.
Love London, so that doesn’t put me off either. And the crowds are ok if you have the patience to wait your turn to get to what you want to see. I’ve never been “moved on” unless the TV cameras are there.
