  • Moved some stuff around today, aconitum, nepeta, astrantia, small hollyhocks, polemonium, sidalcea, a persicaria and a lupin.

Unpacked a consignment from plants for shade, never used them before, got next day delivery, rather impressive. Mostly ferns but also some pulmonaria and geraniums. Got a few sections of the shade border to replant but have to fix the fence first and put up a new trellis.

Noticed some pears on the ground so collected them and some from the tree that twisted off easily.

  • It's been raining all day, some really heavy stuff, so my only gardening has been done on the computer!
Looked through seed lists for things I want a lot of, then checked germination process and looked up plants for things that were just too tricky to be worthwhile.
Found lots of nice things on Beth Chatto.
Her damp garden stuff is great, as I am planning to develop the cantre part of my 'Dell' which is fairly/very boggy and currently covered in nettles, Darmera and sedges, with a massive Skunk cabbage as star attraction!
I have already removed loads of Yellow flag iris and a runaway Persicaria bidding to take over the entire space. Plan is to plant bog Primulas along the stream, then add other plants to make it all more interesting and give some summer colour. It will get more light now as Beast from the East brought down two pine trees.
I did pick some runner beans from a very wet veg garden if that counts!

Just done a few small jobs today and I have moved the potted Acers to their Autumn positions - two by the front door and one by the patio doors - so I can see the colour changes over the next few weeks. I was going to cull the Sweet Peas, as the foliage is dying back, but there a few more buds, so they can have another week or so.
My garden and I live in South Wales.
  • I’ve moved a Jude the obscure rose from pot to ground. I got it as a bare root plant in March. It now has a wider trellis to grow up so I can train the branches horizontal.
Pricked out candytuft and salvia mearleau blue.
    Pruned wisteria (its a beast!)
Tidied behind the greenhouse so I have a sheltered spot to over winter some young plants.
Loved every minute but back aching now 😩

I cut down two clumps of crocosmia before they go all wet and horrid, then my OH pruned the smoke tree - again! It grows like a triffid and I think it will have to go, it's too close to the house and pushes under the gutters.  In the afternoon I went to Mitzi's garden at the local school and planted a lovely deep orange/red rudbeckia, a pale yellow yarrow and a (hopefully) yellow kniphofia to give the garden some late September colour, all at reduced prices from Homebase Friday last.  It doesn't fit in with my original colour scheme of purple, pink, blue and white (it was supposed to be a calming contemplative garden for the little ones if they're upset) but most of that has died down now apart from masses of purple verbena bon.  The ground is still very dry though so I do hope we get some more heavy rain soon.

  • Your dell project sounds like good fun Buttercupdays🙂

Didn't do much in the garden today, mostly up at the allotment.

Collected some cerinthe seeds, the self seeded plants always get frosted. Remeasured the area of the front garden I'm converting to hard standing. Moving plants as and when there's room or they've stopped flowering.

Spent ages collecting crabs to make crab apple wine. They're a funny creature, either rock hard or rotten🤔 Need 2.5kg for the recipe I have, hope that includes stalks, pips and bugs. These are from malus pink glow, a jolly nice tree.

  • Praying for rain, meant to be Thursday, then today, nothing, Hubby and no one son have dug foundations for new shed, clay soil, took them all day, Hubby started early after breakfast before son got here, filled large skip, now want rain to settle it, I moved a few smaller barrow loads of soil round the front to the skip.
