I'm both glad and sorry Pdoc - sorry you can't go but glad that you won't.

The child abuse stories in the media at the moment seem to be utterly relentless - like an epidemic. It's profoundly depressing

    Morning all .

Dry here , partly cloudy and the wind is from the north so probably a bit chilly out.

Coal face at 12 , no idea if I'm in store or on the road.

Hubby is heading to Bude so I'll give him a list. Lidl had sweet pea seeds for 26p a packet last year, I think B&M might be good for some bulbs and Morrisons have eucomis for £1 each. ( all stores close together  ) fingers crossed he gets carried away on a buying frenzy.image

No 1 daughter is in Medellin now and an old friend from Uni is flying down from Canada to join her for a while.

Chicky, when does Chicklet head for home?

    Devon.
  • Child abuse? image  Having worked in child protection it's only too obvious (and there is empirical evidence) that abusers are usually people who have been abused.  Children learn what they experience and it's something that's hard to undo.  Couple that with an abuser's need to introduce others into their circle in order not to feel what they're doing is beyond the pale and society's tendency not to address the painful stuff 'cos it's so painful it's something that has just gone on and on unchecked.

It's not that long ago that people didn't discuss death or cancer or sex  ..... at least if social media has done one good thing it's that people talk about stuff.

Maybe we're lancing the boil at last ......... but it'll probably get worse before it gets better.

Good morning all.  Been one of those nights so am up late and feeling bleary for it.

Managed to buy a water butt on the way home from sewing and one, very restrained packet of sweetcorn seeds but no bulbs or plants.  Apart from anything else, a water butt fills a supermarket trolley..........

It does seem strange to me that so many abused children go on to become abusers themselves knowing, all the while, how dreadful it is for the victims.  I don't understand why this particular crime is so self perpetuating.   Let's hope Dove's right and the glare of publicity will help end it or drastically reduce it.

Quiet day for me then.  Hope everyone has a good one.   Lots to look forward to Chicky and yes, pleased you're not going Pdoc.

I agree with you entirely Dove, so many of the stories are just so sad.

I think it is a bit like 3 generations of the same family being unemployed. Since the grandfather lost his job in the steel mills, neither his son,or, his grandson have ever worked. Not an uncommon story in some parts of Sheffield.

We used to go to dances in the Charleroi area of Belgium - huge numbers of Italian immigrants after the war to work in coal and steel and lots of them in the dance cubs and great fun.  All closed down now so similar story of generations following each other in unemployment as a way of life.  I once remarked to a Belgian friend that they were all very small in stature compared to us - That's because someone told them they'd have to go to work when they grew up!

I believe it's slowly changing and Charleroi is regenerating.

Dovefromabove , I do hope you are right

  • More investment in mental health is imperative ........ the damage won't repair itself.  It might surprise you to know that many homeless rough sleepers and prisoners were the victims of abuse.  If we don't try to make them better for their own sake (and of course we should), then we should do it to save society more money in the long term.

I've heard from Nora that they're tackling the photo uploading glitch so hopefully that'll soon be ok.

I'm just off to catch a bus into the city.  See you later.  image
