I picked it up and placed it to photograph and that's what it did.

For those of you who have been watching Spring Watch, you will have heard about the 95% decline in Turtle Doves. I feel very fortunate to have seen this one.

I didn't know their numbers had dropped that much!  That's shocking.

They are nearly gone from the UK and commonly shot across Europe.

Absolutely gorgeous. I had a "local patch" in Cheshire, near Northwich that had the last breeding Turtle Dove in the county. I can't remember exactly but it would have been about 1995 when they just didn't come back one spring, very sad.

Baby Woodpecker feeding time. Apologies for the blurred photos, shooting through double glazing with too slow a shutter speed.

  • What a fabulous set of pictures steephill.  I think they are super - never mind the quality they give a brilliant show of their feeding.  We only have one or two pairs over here & I have only heard not seen them.

    Lovely woodpeckers. A rare sight.

This is another of my gorg amphibians. Springwatch tell me that frogs generally favour temporary water sources like puddles and seasonal ponds. Toads like permanent ponds and lakes. I'm now wondering if my frogs are in fact toads. What do we think? Should I kiss it and find out?
