Fantastic, Jules...mine were in the garden at 21.45 the other night, so still light enough to see them properly.

Thanks. I'm pleased because the garden has gone from being a sea of concrete to a garden that must be working!
  • Lovely little creatures and well done Jules for giving them a haven to enjoy.  We have a few hogs here, I do feed them, but they also mop up the seed droppings on the grass from the bird table which is great.  They arrive here at around 8 p.m. and then get fed by me at around 10 p.m. They make quite a noise with their grunting and shuffling, a little pushing and shoving goes on too, we are hoping for young ones later in the summer. Perhaps your hog will encourage a mate to come too.....

great stuff Jules, they need all the help they can get!

A little video of my eldest feeding the neighbours birds whilst they were on holiday. He has an old bell outside the door, and when he rings it the robins turn up immediately! https://youtu.be/fqEwfHoMzo4

Some amazing photos on this thread  :) I don't have any to offer, just wanted to congratulate Jules on the hedgepig's arrival.

We took part in a local bat survey this year - just got the results. We have pipistrelles (very common), soprano pipistrelles (less common), barbastelles (rare) and some 'myotis species'. No horseshoe bats, but a good mix of the others. Very pleased - even if I have absolutely no chance of photographing them  :)

I'm going to put up some bat boxes. Surrounding streets have bats but I have never seen one over the gardens on our side of things. I'm taking it as a challenge.

Oh good luck  :) According the batman website, pipistrelles are both the most common in the UK and the ones most likely to be found in towns, so that's the type to target.
The RSPB (weirdly) has info on building bat boxes on their website

I really hope you can get some into your garden in the evening - they are amazing to watch

Thanks. Fingers crossed. I think the RSPB have branched out in scope to support wild nature generally.
  • Raisingirl, I would be so proud to have all those various bat species visiting my garden/surrounds.  We used to have bats (not sure of the type), but sadly they don't come here anymore.  We had 4 hedgehogs at the same time. last night - that is the most we have seen at one time here.  Surely one will reproduce this summer?
