I had a trip to the US a few years ago with a small party of British people (and one Irishman). The guide was hugely enthusiastic about an old gold rush settlement now abandoned. We let him gush for a bit about it's amazing state of preservation, then one of our party remarked casually, 'of course, my house is older than that'. Nods all round - 'mm, mine too'. Poor chap was a bit crestfallen. But we did love the scenery - real mountains, deep snow in the mountain passes, baking sunshine in the extraordinary valleys. That's what I've generally travelled for - snow capped mountains, volcanoes and lakes the size of small seas and the sort of big wild scenery that is uncommon in southern England.
I believe it was Sir Terry Pratchett who observed that the 'humanities' are generally mutually exclusive - places either have lots of history or very big geography but rarely both
Beautiful morning here - shame it's not forecast to last. Must get down to the village before the bakery sell out of my favourite type of loaf
oops - sorry, nearly forgot - Happy Birthday BL

Gardening on the edge of Exmoor, in Devon
“It's still magic even if you know how it's done.”
Glad Mrs Dacha is feeling better and can enjoy the holiday. Ma used to get terrible migraines ... I'm so lucky that I only get occasional visual disturbances and not the pain.
I need to get a move on now too Fairy ... bread, a joint for tomorrow, cheese ...
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
DID podcasts are one of my holiday favourites too Dacha - try to find Noel Gallaghers .....its great
Today I will wander round the garden looking - getting to the stage when I don't see it in the light on a weekday . And helping littlest Chicklet with her packing. Sisters are doing Dad visiting this weekend - they think he'll be out (into a convalescence place) on Monday, which sounds good progress.
I got another hour in bed before Hubby woke me with a cuppa and reminded me I had to have my hair cut at 8.45.
Happy Birthday BL. Have a great day.
Re "old" buildings. We took my girls on the London Eye years ago and 2 Americans were asking each other what the building was with the dome.
"It's like our Senate building. Do you think they copied it?"
" That , gentelmen, is St Paul's Cathedral . It was built in the 17th Century when your country was one of our colonies, so no, we didn't copy your Senate building"

Enjoy your day.

Well done Hosta. Ignorant b.....s. They should stay at home if they dont know any history of the places they visit.
