I've had a lot of success this later summer/autumn with rooting cuttings in compost pots - first time they've worked out! I've now got several aster, salvia, lavender and the only thing that hasn't worked out at all is rosemary.
Anyway, I had a few cuttings which didn't have roots on but also hadn't shrivelled up yet when I emptied out the pots to pot on the rest. So I popped them in a jar of water.
The lavender had a small bit of root but that broke off during handling - it's grown a few now in the water.
This erysimum had no sign of root. I've just potted it today.
I just discovered in the last couple weeks that Ruellia (Mexican Petunia) roots readily in water. Got 12 purple starts of it rooted. Took them to the cabin property to plant out in a focal clump in the pasture opposite the cabin front veranda. I love all flowers purple and blue.
Is there some cunning trick to this? I saw this topic a while ago and thought I'd give it a try. I've had verbena b and various fuchsia dipped in a jar of water for nearly 8 weeks now. They've not rotted, still healthy green, but zero roots or sign of movement. Conversely the cuttings I've put into pots have all taken.
Fair enough. I shall continue to flail around in the dark, randomly throwing cuttings into water and dirt, pretending it's skill and not blind luck when they take
About 3 or 4 weeks ago, I came across a board member asking for help with growing onions in water from the the bits that are usually discarded. I was pretty sure this was the thread but, unfortunately, I can't find the post.
As I always throw little bits of veg (from just under 1cm- 2cm) in to small trays of tiny amounts of water, just to see what happens, and watch them grow roots and leaves as if by magic (!), I know for a fact that this method works.
After reading that post, I did the same again with total "success".
Really easy, just don't drown them.
