I had an echinacea seedling that had been trying to grow through weed membrane since last spring that I pulled out and stuck in some water.  Very little roots, but it sent out a ton more after a month in a jar of water on the counter.  I planted it out a few months ago and it is happily thriving and flowering.

Patience seems to be an important ingredient.
I've thrown things out after a couple of weeks. I'm thinking that if I didn't have them in full view on the kitchen windowsill, they might have a better chance -out of sight out of mind and all that

Does anyone know whether murky water is better than clean, regularly changed water?

  • It's worth trying everything! Carnations/dianthus will, although I see someone said they don't. I'm currently waiting for one to flower which came from a Tesco bunch last year. I've rooted alpines, herbs and geraniums in the past.

@ShepherdsBarn. Give it a go and let us know how you get on. You've nothing to lose😊
I took about 20 cuttings, put them in water and all but one has rooted!
Next question ... what do I do with them now?! Will they overwinter?

    That's happened to me a few times😕
But we both know what would happen if you tried just a couple. Nothing😊

What did you do specifically?  How much vine and how many leaves?  I've wanted to propagate my grapes, but haven't got around to it yet.

  • I was late in cutting back my grape vine to 5 leaves, so just cut it back and then took cuttings of the cuttings! I placed them in an aluminium bowl but added tissue along the edges when it got a bit hot. The cuttings were various lengths from about 5" to 10" ( at a guess). See photos.
As yet I have not potted them on. Any advice with this would be appreciated.
