That's a moth caterpillar and those are wasp pupae. Butterflies don't really bother with tomato plants as far as I know.

Thanks! Do you know what moth it could be? I checked so many butterfly caterpillars searching for the name of that one. I have a lot of Small white butterflies around that bed. I thought they are the culprit.
True, I’m learning how to identify these insects …. if there were not so many different types 😀
The bright line brown eye is the usual suspect with tomatoes. There's a lot to learn with insects but once you start to get the overall picture they're a lot easier to work out. There's always new and fascinating things to find out too.

If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

Haven't had a real holiday in decades. Perhaps you're right.@fire.  But it has got an evil eye on its wing.
    In London. Keen but lazy.

Oh gods, are you seeing "evil eyes" too? (stands back and laughs maniacally)

@pitter-patter some very nice shots, I love the furry moth - nut-tree tussock, maybe?

@Fire I think they are the eggs of the vapourer moth.
  • I've just found this thread and the photos are amazing!! I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask whether anyone knows what this insect is? at first I thought they were flying ants but their wings look too small?anyone have any ideas?and how I can get rid of them.. they were all over soapwort then a lupin..you have to get the photo enlarged .sorry if this isn't the right place to ask
