That's a moth caterpillar and those are wasp pupae. Butterflies don't really bother with tomato plants as far as I know.
Thanks! Do you know what moth it could be? I checked so many butterfly caterpillars searching for the name of that one. I have a lot of Small white butterflies around that bed. I thought they are the culprit. True, I’m learning how to identify these insects …. if there were not so many different types 😀
The bright line brown eye is the usual suspect with tomatoes. There's a lot to learn with insects but once you start to get the overall picture they're a lot easier to work out. There's always new and fascinating things to find out too.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
The world seemed to be full of honey bees today: they were swarming around our echinops, then we went to the GC later this afto and there were piles of them there too!
I've just found this thread and the photos are amazing!! I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask whether anyone knows what this insect is? at first I thought they were flying ants but their wings look too small?anyone have any ideas?and how I can get rid of them.. they were all over soapwort then a lupin..you have to get the photo enlarged .sorry if this isn't the right place to ask
A highlight from moth trapping last night, probably the most ridiculous looking moth yet, like something off a cheap Easter cake, the Canary-shouldered Thorn.

I’ve spend a blissful hour watching insects in the garden. What a mysterious world.
