When out for a walk yesterday I was distracted by a noise. The noise of rapid beating wings. I looked down at my feet and this is what I was met with. Two large dragonfly’s mid ‘courtship’ and apparently being attacked by a hornet(?).

No photo but had the privilege of having a butterfly just perch on my shorts as I was taking a rest on the allotment.

    Stayed for about 30 seconds.

    I got a bit emotional.

Lovely butterfly enjoying the Yarrow flowers today. Makes leaving wild areas in the garden worthwhile  :)

I believe its a Gatekeeper. Sorry about the out of focus photo but that was the only one I got with the wings open.

    Leafcutter bee, I think:

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

@Bijdezee what is the gatekeeper sitting on?

(It sounds like a spy code. Answer: The Gatekeep sits on the Golden Spoon.) 👁

They can carry quite large caterpillars so I guess they need some pretty big jaws for that.

@wild edges How on earth do you pick up all these bees and wasps without getting stung?!
Carefully :#  They're mostly very calm and I've never been stung but I wouldn't recommend trying it.

If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

Dozy bees are very sedate. Those are the ones that crawl on to my hand quite peacefully.
