Seen today on the house wall, it was there for a few hours. It is called a Red Underwing moth and I would have liked to see it fly. The markings are beautiful..
You are right of course Papi Jo, we couldn't tell one Sympetrum from another so asked for some local help. It doesn't seem to be in lava laying mode - perhaps too late, but we do have quite a bit of lava from the Emperor dragon fly earlier this summer.

What a beautiful photo, Colin! I keep scrolling back to it
I have several Buddleja in my garden which have been covered in Red Admirals, Peacocks and Commas, but no Painted Ladies this year.
Has anyone seen any?

I have been told that this is a Common Darter Sympetrum striolatum visiting our pond today.

Well-spotted, GD2. It's hard to tell one Sympetrum from another, so I suppose you've been helped by a knowledgeable entomologist.
My Syrian hibiscus [Lavender Chiffon] has finished flowering and its fruit are much appreciated by firebugs (Pyrrhocoris apterus).
Pyrrhocoris apterus nymph
Pyrrhocoris apterus adult

Pp identified this chap as a tic tac beetle on another thread but I can't find it on Google.
Has anyone got another name for it?
It's a bit where's Wally I'm afraid. He's about one third down from the top slightly left of centre.
