No so much an insect of the day, but a creature from the deep has crawled out of his diving suit and took to the air. this is the 6th dragon fly to have left the pond this summer (+ the rare event of one of our lilly's being in flower)
Fascinating aren't they @theBadCormorant , they obviously find your pond attractive for their egg laying, interesting picture.
Yes we're very fortunate, even got a picture of an adult (probably laying eggs) last year. The story goes it takes the nymph up to 4 years to emerge, so I guess todays appearance is from an earlier one.
Super photos everyone! A couple of predators which are patrolling my greenhouse. The hoverflies are constantly searching from leaf to leaf for aphids on the sweet peppers and cucumbers and the wasp (Apechthis rufata) will be on the lookout for caterpillars to lay eggs into (that ovipositor looks painful!):
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
Extra bit of protein @Hexagon Lovely pix @BobTheGardener. I know what you mean about the ovipositor. They don't like it up them... Love that moth @Guernsey Donkey2. Wonderfully camouflaged Fab dragonfly nymphs and pix @theBadCormorant. Stunning. I was thrilled that these have finally put in an appearance in this garden. Only taken 6 years. We used to get them every year in the garden I had nearby. There was a large 'cloud' of them all flitting around. At least ten or twelve. Heavenly
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Well my "insect of the day" came along and ruined my iced coffee. Barely 1/3 drunk when it made a deliberate effort to land in the coffee. Then it drowned. Silly thing.
So why didn’t you save it then? Were you busy talking pictures that you can post in the thread dedicated to how beautiful and amazing living insects can be?
