A 24 spot ladybird (with 21 spots). Only about 3mm long and so small I couldn't tell it was a ladybird until I reviewed the photo. Apparently they're uncommon but widespread.

Thanks for the pics of the "shelly creatures", @wild edges !
Yesterday had a visit of a praying mantis wanting to seek shelter from the cold in our living-room. But my OH did not want it in, so took a pic with my smartphone, as my normal camera was not available. Not a great pic, but here we go...
Today, one more "visitor" clinging to our living-room window-pane, wanting to come inside. OH still not too keen, so I took a pic (with a proper camera this time).Tipula (crane fly).
I brought some plants in from the greenhouse for the winter and had a big fungus gnat outbreak in the house. Sticky traps weren't effective enough so I made this pooter to see if it could help catch them. I got about fifty before I started getting light headed and had to give up. Really good way to deal with them though.

Yeah there's fine mesh over the end of the tube you suck to prevent anything getting through. I tried the hoover but can't get close enough to plants without causing damage.
