Photo is not up to the standard of some of the stunning shots on this thread, but a pair of damselflies visited our pond today, which is a first (that I have seen). The other one had a much duller body but the very tip of the body was still bright blue.

Even worse pictures this time, but just caught a frisky pair "in the act", so hopefully this means some new additions to the pond fauna, for a while at least!

with apologies for the quality of this pic:

I think they're brilliant Matt - no need to apologise!
It's often quite hard to get a photo when there's water as the background too. The colour in that first pic is great.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Managed to grab a better one with my ancient D60 SLR and a telephoto. I think I can feel an interest in insect photography coming on, I hope it's not too expensive!

  • The are called Common Blue Damselfly but there is nothing common about these @matt_fender they
are beautiful pictures and rare in our garden too.

Thanks @Guernsey Donkey2. They were buzzing around the pond for what must have been a good couple of hours this afternoon, and she (presumably?) dipped her rear end into the water on many occasions. I assume laying a small clutch of eggs each time? Hopefully they will thrive in our little wildlife pond and I will be able to report back with some emerging shots in a year or so!

I came home from work to find some yellow faced bees (not sure of the species) having a three way love triangle on the leaf of one of my raspberries (until they fell off on to the path).

My insects of the day are still in their infancy. I expect those to be the eggs of the common green shieldbug, Palomena prasina. A neat arrangement, don't you think? I'll try to follow their evolution and post more pics in the coming days.

Those eggs have just hatched! The eggs are empty and most of the little critters have gone away. You can still see a few on the first photo below, but the light was poor and they are rather blurred (and tiny, of course).

Fantastic Matt. I'd be thrilled to get a photo like that  :)

Those are great too Papi Jo. Lovely to be there to see them hatching out.

Who is this beetle I wonder. He seemed like he was trying to fly but was not really able to. May be he just hatched?
I also made a video but only know how to upload pictures.

About half inch big, quite noisy when flapping those wings trying to take off. Hope not some kind of endangered insect, still I locked my cat in as he was very interested in the noisy little visitor.
