    It looks like a Cockchafer.

Thank you Alan, that’s the one. Totally makes sense - they love feeding off oak leafs and we have a big oak tree growing in the garden next door.
I actually can’t believe they only live for 8 weeks having spent two years as pupae.  Wow...

@Big Blue Sky , well, in that respect you can't beat the insects of the Magicicada species which spend almost the full length of their long lives underground (13 to 17 years) [...]. After the prolonged developmental phase, the adults are active for only about 4 to 6 weeks. From Wikipedia.

  • Mayflies live for as little as a few hours as an adult, after living a year as nymphs.

Can anyone help ID this one, there seems to be a few similar ones? The yellow splotch on the forewing is pretty large, but difficult to get a pic of it...

  • Brimstone butterflies. Males are yellow, females are green.

I have a little wild patch in a corner of the garden where the hog box is, I was over there this morning and saw this little fellow. Not sure but thing it might be a Cinnabar.
  • Yes, it is a Cinnabar.
