Thanks, @Papi Jo! This is my container pond: only 39cm w x 39 l x 20 h, but I'm planning to build a proper wildlife pond this year. Happy to see that the area is already no stranger to damselflies!
Check the stems of any plant rising out of the water and if you see shed insect skins stuck to them then the damsel flies have emerged from your pond. The skins are about 2cm long so easy to spot.
What is the small floating plant you have by the way?

It seems a great year for ladybirds. I have seen more in the few weeks in my garden than I have in the last nine years put together. And then I just saw larvae, tiny, on the crab apple trees. The two year old trees are a total mess with rust, mildew and aphids, but I will just leave it all and leave the ladybirds to fill their metaphorical boots.
I've seen loads away from my garden but here I've only seen two. One was a cream-spot ladybird, which I see a few of each year, but the other was a kidney-spot ladybird which I totally failed to get a photo of so it doesn't count for my species record They're not a common bug up here for some reason and I've only recorded four species so far.
