Gardeners world , beech grove

Was not very impressed with Gardeners world or beechgrove  as there  seems to be more focus on subjects outside the garden and plugging the commercial side . I want to see work done in the garden maybe a small clip of a visit somewhere but not nearly all the show .

Like you Jason, I hope that Beechgrove keep to their original format of 'practical' gardening.  Last week was a visit to a garden show with annoying camera work zooming in and out.  Hopefully they will be back to 'normal' by next week.  Fingers crossed. Keep watching.

I agree with you both, the majority of last evenings GW was devoted to Chatsworth flower show.  I understand that it is the first year of a hopefully successful ongoing show, but maybe it would have been better to have warned us that it was primarily about the show, or to have had a one off special just about it to be added to the tv scheduling.

They've always visited that show. It's the only one they do, as it's the only one we have up here. I personally loathe all these shows, but many people can't get to them so it's of interest to a lot of folk. I don't think it's such a hardship to devote one programme to it.

Re G's World - they did state last week that the programme would primarily be from there. They do that regularly when these shows are on.

I was thinking exactly the same.
I want to see a real gardener doing real gardening and offering tips and advice - e.g. Monty at Longmeadow. That's what a gardening programme should be about.
I'm not in the least bit interested in seeing Chatsworth with its hundreds of acres, pretty but not in the least bit informative and bears no relation to my little plot.
Beechgrove is usually more practical - but they decided to dedicate a prog. to a flower show last week.

If I want to look at videos of great gardens there are thousands on youtube.

What I want is a practical gardening prog!

More gardening and less talking to the dogs " oh there you are. Where have you been? ) close ups of dozing dogs. Asking dogs what they think of topiary. Shots of monty pushing a barrow whilst being followed by dogs , EVERY SINGLE WEEK  etc etc etc.

More gardening. More gardening  and yet more gardening would be good.

I've got the 3 DVD set of Geoff from the 80's. So gentle, relaxing and informative. I watch the whole set a least once every year and still always learn something 'new'

I love the dogs in GW - the best gardening assistants out there. Whenever you're working in the garden and wondering where that ball is, just turn round and the dog is there with it in their mouth - with a waggy tail of course :)

At least Jim on Beechgrove talks to the nurserymen and women about their plants and advises viewers also to go and talk to the experts about how and where to grow plants.   As FG says, they always visit that show and why would they not?  It's supposed to showcase the best of Scottish plantsmanship.

Been too busy to see either programme yet this week but will catch up in a quiet moment.

You really are the most appalling flamer.   This thread is about Beechgrove and GW now.

Geoff Hamilton, in his day, was far in advance of others with his advocacy for organic gardening and environmental awareness.   He introduced all sorts of experts including women known for their knowledge of houseplants, pests and diseases and design.   He made anyone feel they could be a gardener regardless of the size of their garden or their budget or their skills level.

That long ago even David Attenborourgh was sceptical about climate change.

Ignorance and prejudice seems to be the norm for this poster Obelixx. image

Geoff was indeed a great promoter of 'natural gardening' when it was very unfashionable. He was seen as a bit weird  by many of the 'spray 'em and kill 'em' brigade. Hard to believe now!
