Thanks, they were actually very easy to make. I didn't even use a tape measure. I just laid two timber batons at angles on the patio, made sure they were square (not wonky) and joined them together with the cross pieces, then marked around them with chalk on the patio, and then put to one side. Then laid two more batons on the floor, lining up with chalk marks and joining with cross members, then joined both sides together with more cross members.
Geof finished his off with plumbing ball cocks on top, but I didn't get around to that bit.
I've listened to GQT since I was a child. I've been in the audience too. It's always been a favourite of mine. Used to love listening to Geoffrey Smith.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
Funnily enough I did have the ballcocks on the top of my GH obelisks. They lasted quite a few years as well until I got fed up painting them blue every year.

A bit unfair on Percy Thrower I think. Far less was known about the potential side effects of many chemicals when PT was doing the programmes. I can fully understand how gardeners from his era saw sprays etc as a wonderful cure for all the problems of bugs and blights.
I don't think so. There was an organic movement already then. He stopped presenting in 1976 and GH started in 1979 so not a huge stretch of time to make the connections. I can remember GH being a very strong campaigner for safeguarding the environment - no sprays, using garden compost to feed soil and its organisms, making his tufa rocks and tubs to save limestone pavements and so on.
