I remember when Delia did her Ho to Cook series and the first one was on eggs.  Shops sold out of a particular omelette pan the next day.

With GW it's more of a problem if people buy plats that won't suit their conditions or which will otherwise prove unsuitable so I do think he could and should be more clear sometimes about the needs of plants he's using.  It's all very well saying Right Plant Right Place but too many beginners and others haven't a clue and just assume stuff will grow.   Caveat emptor I suppose but his advice is sometimes iffy and there are too many projects where we get no follow up.

Too posh for me Hosta,  I don't like anything laid out as regimental as that, mine's just a rambling cottage garden with whatever will grow in it, do like tubs and baskets on the patio though but only pink blue and lavender colours. Yellows and orange are far to gaudy on the patio, not restful.

Having said that, I have set those Tithonia seeds as above, the cottage garden beds turn to hot clolours  in the late summer.

this is more me in the Spring, unless I've jumped to conclusions and you know another Lyn?.

Lyn,I was thinking of your patio area. The plants themselves, rather than the overall " display"

Aym in late summer and autumn all that lot will be finished then it's full of hot colours. Hoping to delay the Tithonia until I need it.

It's there fault if they don't research which type of soil they have. He's only advising where to put them. He does give follow ups.

Totally agree Obelixx. They could do with a back to basics type of slot for people who are novices. After all, we were all novices at one point. I think G's W should be at the forefront of that type of info, even though it might be a bit boring for more knowledgeable folk.

Visits to stately homes or gardens of the rich and famous are all very well, but what use is that to the majority? Basic info is a must for most gardeners. Look at the number of posters on this forum who are asking questions as they're just starting out. They need help and encouragement. A little slot which could be seasonal, with seed sowing and cutting taking, and how to follow those up would surely be very useful. Other subjects like pruning as the year goes on, and maintenance suited to an average garden would also be ideal. Wouldn't need to be long - but could be a continuing theme.

I appreciate they can't cater for everyone - even in an hour long programme - but I think they've lost that type of item. I still feel the programme is just a pleasant way to spend half an hour rather than being informative.

Just my opinion, for what it's worth. I'm sure lots of people will give me grief for it though image

Not me. I see it as a quiet half hour with a glass of wine or a coffee depending on when I watch it.  Long gone are the days when I watched on Friday night and went to bed inspired and itching to be up and at it on Saturday morning.

Quite agree that more programmes need to be aimed at the rank amateur. I thought the ones when Joe Swift started an allotment were very good for novices.

As for Fridays programme - I would have liked to have spent more time in Beth Chatto's garden, less time pruning grapes. I thought when they were at the stately Home the cameraman was struggling a bit with his shots - only one shot was excellent, the rest just made the borders look very messy and uninteresting. Anyone else think that? And why in the heck was Adam whispering????? He was the only one in the garden for heaven's sake. And I don't much like him as an interviewer either.

Glad the blighted box have gone but I like my little circular box hedge. I grew it all from cuttings following Geof Hamilton's advice of many years ago, of just buying 2 plants and use them for cuttings.  That is going to be a humungous herb garden - how many are they feeding at Long Meadow????

I think that one of the problems, is that we all want different things.

Beginners want basics, whereas the more experienced want something different.

I think that it is very difficult for one show to fulfil all requirements.

Like Verdun, I would like whole programs devoted to particular gardens.
