At least one of ‘our’ hedgehogs is still visiting the feeding station several nights a week.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

God bless this lady, l hope she gets the response she's looking for. As she says, it requires responsible people. It's not easy, as my previous post proves.

  • Paper work and more paper work.  I know from various friends that their job is more about form filling and admin. than it is about their actual job i.e. nurses, teachers etc. However dedication is still at the heart of any job and we (the public) often forget this when we should be applauding their efforts. I hope she gets the support she rightly deserves too @AnniD
  • I am so excited!  I have seen a couple of hedgehog poos near their feeding station. However I haven't put any food out for them since I realized they were no longer eating it - a few weeks before Christmas, so tonight the food dish went out and I am hoping (or do I really want it/them to go back into hibernation?) to see them again soon.  Another first for this year - I saw a fully grown newt in our pond.  We haven't had any really cold weather yet and now that I have seen these first signs of Spring I don't want the weather to turn colder now.

Any sign of them last night @Guernsey Donkey2 ?
Our local rescue has feeding stations and cameras in their garden , and there has been hedgehog activity for the last few weeks. Very few of her patients have hibernated, if any.
I have been looking for signs of poo here as it has been comparatively mild although very wet and windy since Christmas, but no joy.
  • No sign of the hedgehog last night.  We are all surprised that they hibernated over this winter, it has not been cold.  In fact I remember one coming to feed from the bowl when we had snow on the ground and it continued to come all through that winter.  My neighbour also feeds her hogs but has seen none for 2 or 3 months now.

I haven't had any hogs for a long time since October there's no sign of them being around. Don't know if i should start putting food out just in case.
  • I was so excited - we saw our first hog of the year.  It stopped by the feeding bowl for a few short minutes around 9 p.m.  I couldn't believe my eyes, so had a good close up look (through closed glass door) just to make sure the hog wasn't an enormous rat - luckily it was a hog.  I will add some chopped apple to the food tomorrow evening which may encourage it to feed for longer.

That's great news, but i don't think that you should give it fruit, i might be wrong though.

I hadn't heard of hedgehogs eating apples, so did a bit of searching. I came across this, which does mention giving them apple and carrot for example
    https://scrumbles.co.uk/what-do-hedgehogs-eat/
I also read that they will eat windfall apples that they come across. Must admit that this is a new one to me ! I have looked at the BHPS Hedgehog Street site, which tends to be my "bible" and they make no mention of fruit or veg, but do say that hedgehogs will eat virtually anything whether it's good for them or not. (Bread and milk or mealworms for example).
@Guernsey Donkey2 has a nearby rescue so l expect they advise what to feed, l know different rescues sometimes give slightly different advice.
