I put out food for the one in our garden along with water. As the weather warmed up I put a small amount of food by the hog house which after a while went. I don't put to much out until it's getting near the hibernation time just enough so it comes back then I put a nice big saucer out to help fatten then up for the winter. Last year there was one by the curb and a fox came along and tried to get it but it roll into a ball. right or wrong when the fox went up the road I went out wearing gloves and brought it into our back garden. I'm glad I did as when the fox came back down the street it went looking for it.
Thank you @Dovefromabove, I never want to witness anything like that again - it was so unexpected, such a tragedy, we must hope for the best. Apparently our rescue centre has over 100 hogs recuperating from injury, illness or neglect, I am happy to have more here, but they seem to be territorial so would soon wander off to find a new area to live in.
That is good news @Dovefromabove and so rewarding for you to see the hog in your garden, I am sure it won't be long before it will find a mate - it is that time of year for a bit of pairing up! I am envious - we have two hog houses in safe areas but no hogs are using them so far.
Update - it may not be the same mummy female but I am thinking perhaps it is as two mature hogs were doing the mating ritual snort, circling activity last night - I could hear them for well over an hour. I hope they find a safer place to rear any offspring in future.
Sitting by the patio window this evening around 6. 45pm I was surprised to see the hedgehog wondering around. I don't normally put the food out for them till later around 9pm when I looked it had all gone so I've put more out as I don't know if the two I've seen this evening are the same one or two different one's. Is 6.45 pm early for them to be about or doesn't it mater at this time of the year.
It is quite early, but l wouldn't be too concerned unless it was staggering around or very listless. Depending on where you live, the weather may be a factor. One turned up here about 9.30 pm which is about half an hour earlier than average and has eaten most of the food. Could just be this weird weather! He (?) had a good drink of water as well.
We often see at least one of our hogs here between 6 - 7 p.m. so I wouldn't be concerned @NannaBoo unless it appears as AnniD has described - acting odd or visibly unwell.
Morning AnniD and Guernsey Donkey2, thanks for that. He/she/they not sure if it's two or just the same one around a lot but not in trouble. All food and water went and so either he/she/they ware hungry or it was two. I', always amazed at how those little legs can carry something that big and move so fast, they can really shift if they want to. Should I clean out the hog house or leave it, if I should clean it when is the best time of year.
