Still more growth on yours than there is on my Montana mayleen GD.  I'm not concerned about mine ?.

Quite normal growth on your C. Montana, GD, don't worry. Just be patient, it will be OK.

I can only confirm what others have said, a pot won't suit this plant, it really needs to be planted in the soil.image

It's water it needs more than anything GD. In a pot, but also right next to a wall are two things that are difficult right away. Unless the wall is directly in the firing line of the rain, it'll be drier there than out in a more open location.

You're going to have to move it from that pot to get the best from it. If it has to be potted - you need something really substantial to give it room. image

Stupidly i cut through 2 of the 3 main stems of mine at ground level when clearing my garden a few weeks ago.image

It'll be fine Mortuus. Put a little barrier round the stems - a few small  canes will do -  it to prevent it happening again, and let nature take it's course. They're tough plants image

  • The wall is facing south Fairygirl, so the rain which usually comes from the south or southwest hits the wall, however it gets full sun in the summer too, so very hot. I will see how it does this summer, but still I feel the leaves are small.  I have three other clematis, all of which have healthy looking new shoots not little stunted ones like this Montana has at the mo.

That's a great idea Fairy to help prevent either pulling or clipping out an important plant at the point of growth from the soil.

To be honest GD - I don't think there's anything wrong with the leaves in your 2nd pic. Montana's foliage does look a bit different from other clematis. image

  • I shall continue to nurture it and post an update - I am looking forward to it flowering this year - it will add some lovely colour to a granite wall, all being well.  In the meantime I have ordered another batch of 5 clematis plugs - I really enjoyed watching them (the plugs) grow last year.

Our Clematis Montana wilsonii, whixw we thought was dead, has suddenly started to grow vigorously!  Should I cut back mostof the many vigorous bushy shoots and leave 2 or 3 strong ones to climb, or just leave it alone?
    Thanks!
  • I am no expert on clematis, but I would be inclined to leave the shoots and allow them to grow, I wouldn't want to disturb this new found vigour.  However I do water my Montanas every day - a good soaking, and feed once a week.
