Can't go far wrong with Etoile Violette, Dove. More reddish purple than DD ( which is my preference anyway) but stunning and so easy. I'd never be without it in any garden.
I don't think any montana would ever be happy in a pot long term either. The glory of them is the fact that they ramble and spread and look fabulous - even if only for a short while - and they need room down below to achieve that.
Sorry GD - we all seem to be raining on your parade!
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Yes Fairygirl, I am feeling quite disillusioned as I was advised that a pot would be o.k. for this clematis. I can move it, but not yet, and as you can see we bought a trellis especially for the Montana. However I don't want a dead clematis, but it will be a few weeks before we can move the plant into a more shady place. However having said that I did have a clematis in this shady place a couple of years ago, but it died..... Perhaps clematis are not for me.
Yes, I may well do that Verdun. I do keep it well watered, the roots are sheltered by pebbles and shells, in a good compost, and it really only gets 3 or 4 hours of sun in the height of the summer. However I will monitor it this year and see if it thrives or not. (or dies or not). I am hoping GW mag. will do another clematis plug offer - I think the 4 cost something like £10.00 or less with postage. Wakeshine also bought this offer but received different species, I think they were overwhelmed with the take-up.
I have a viticella clematis in a large tub. It was a small shoot in the wrong place last year. I had no idea what it was, apart from being obviously a clematis so I planted it to see what would appear. It seems to be Madame Julia Correvon. I have an Etoile Violette the other side of the arch.
My Montana Elizabeth has a lot of buds showing now. It got a bit cut back quite a lot by the tree work I and the neighbours have had done. I am looking forward to that blooming though.
Taylors clematis have a fabulous website, putting their clematis is sections i.e colour, name, size, aspect, flowering time, etc each plant has as excellent info section. I bought some for my garden last year and they came well wrapped for postage and they all did well. One called avalanche, an evergreen should have lots a white flowers anyday now, especially if we get a liite warmth
This was my armandii a few weeks ago, cute strong little flowers, it is in a pot too ?

Don't give up GD. Clematis are so rewarding and I'm sure you'll be able to grow them successfully.
Some are quite happy in pots, but it's just a question of getting the right one
If you have a spot that you can move that one to, then that's the best option. It'll be fine for a while there as long as you can keep it well watered
In the meantime, you can research ones which will suit your pot....
