  • Has anyone got Daniel Deronda? I would like to have this one but have not seen it anywhere yet.

  • This is not a selling site and I am not on here trying to sell, but I do stock clematis Daniel Deronda

  • I did scratch the clematis Montana bark, and yes, there is green in the depth of the stems, so I guess it is still alive, I just thought it would have shown some outward growth by now. I will water it more often, the roots are well hidden with bark and shells, and the cyclamen is thriving too.

All my other clematis are showing leaf buds. I will update you.

  • Oh sorry I didn't realise the thread was only about montanas! Thanks Richard Hodson I will think about ordering a Daniel. It was suggested to me as a large flowered purple as an alternative to The President. Good luck with your clematis growth GD2. All the ones I planted last year died back ages ago too. I'm looking forward to seeing if they come back, I think one I have is a montana. It's in a pot and we're hoping it grows up the shed.

I wasn't that keen on DD when I had it - a more bushy habit, and harder to get opened out and climbing. It didn't want to do that at all.

I wasn't too unhappy when it turned up it's toes  image

We don't get any signs of life on montanas till April up here, but as you're so much further south, and with the mild winter everywhere, I thought yours should be a little further on GD. Not the best clematis  for a pot though. Great on a pergola or over a shed or somewher it can scramble away. I loved the one I had in the garden round the corner - all along a fence and over a gateway, as well as up round the back door. It made a bid for world domination  image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Yes I thought that it would be more advanced by now too Fairygirl, and I hoped it hadn't died off.  The pot is about 15 inches deep and I was assured that would be fine for growing a healthy Montana.  It was a plug plant this time last year, and it was fun to watch it mature ( into this mess of shoots), so with all the extra attention it received from me I will be sorry if it doesn't thrive.  However Verdun as reassured me that his is the same, and I guess we have almost the same climate here.

  • Fairy - I agree, Daniel Deronda has been disappointing here too.

There are loads of good deep purple clematis - I'm going to do research for a replacement.

As for growing a Montana in a pot- they have ambitions of growing huge. I had one that covered a large garage. I don't think it'll ever be happy or give its best in a pot.
