Are you Indian? You know more about India than I do........ Never knew it snowed in Nainital........??? I always confuse it with Dehradun

Vishu   No. My husband comes from Nainital which I love.  We used to go India for six weeks every two or three years but I only know the area from Delhi northwards.

People have had success with the common garden tulips too but they need to refrigerate for two months hence not available locally.

The problem is getting the bulbs......

Vishu    the north is beautiful. Cold nights at this time of year but warm during the day.

We stayed overnight at Ranikhet to see the sunrise oner Nanda Dhevi . . . . a beautiful experience.

The relatives all left Srinagar some years ago but plenty of snow there and skiing at Palgham.

An eye-opener indeed.  In my ignorance, it had never occurred to me that there would/could be ski-ing in India!

Isn't it amazing - we gardeners always want something we can't have!  Tropical plants as indoor specimens, acid lovers in tubs because our soil is chalky etc.  We would give our eye teeth for some of India's exotics - and Vishu hankers for tulips.  Never satisfied, are we?

SV   we always want what we can't have eg Bird of Paradise flowers growing outside in Kashmir, huge bushes of Ponsetttia growing wild.......I haven't bought one since seeing them!!

Indeed, It's one of the few upsides of living in india....... We have it all in one country....... Be it the snow chocked valleys and mountains for skiing or the world's wettest place on earth (cherapunji), a hot desert (That in Rajasthan) and a cold desert (Ladakh in J&K), tropical volcanic islands (Andaman and Nicobar), coral islands (lakshdweep), the beaches of Goa and the tropical rainforest of the western Ghats, backwater lagoons of kerala, seasonal salt marshes (rann of kachh in Gujarat), largest mangrove forest in the world( sundarbans in WB) , fertile great northern plains and the Deccan plateau.......... One can find ever type of weather in some part of India (except maybe tundra )

    Do visit some day ?

SV: Same here! My jaw dropped when I saw skiing! Feel sad for Vishu as tulips are like 10 a penny here. It's like I hanker for Romnya Coulteri whilst they grow like weeds in the States. ..

It's alright Amy....... There are some pros too, of living here.......

Like amaryllis is a perennial and flowers twice a year( once in March, once in August)

    Canna flower throughout the year

And we have flowers Blooming outdoors throughout the year.

And everything is super cheap compared to UK.

Potted double amaryllis flowering in 12 inch terracotta pot - 1to 2 £

Planted canna (most expensive one I ever saw) -2£

Normally planted canna costs around 50 pence

    10 Dahlia saplings - 1£

    Etc.
