Sad when a beautiful building is neglected Peter. Hopefully the new owners will restore it and love it, or open it to the public. The cost is so enormous for an undertaking like that unfortunately.
I was doing a hill recently in Glenisla, near Glenshee, which had a small castle at the start of the glen. I took a few photos on the way back, and when I got home, I looked it up to find out a bit about it. It dates back to the 16th century but was destroyed about 100 years later by the Duke of Argyll because of clan disputes and battles etc, and had been a ruined shell ever since. The new owners, in the late 1980s, had restored it and it's now used for weddings, and for hiring for holidays etc. The interior is stunning
Forter Castle
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
It doesn't look that impressive from the outside Liri - it's small - but google it and take a look at the interior. It's been beautifully restored. The owner's daughter did the interior.
The faded grandeur of Italy is hard to beat Peter. Although, in Scotland, I think we give them a real run for their money when it comes to stately homes and Baronial mansions....

Re Forter Castle: there's something about the solidity of that sort of castle, Fairy - built of local stone so it becomes part of the landscape - that really appeals to me. In Northumberland there were Pele Towers and Bastle Houses built similarly.
My favourite castle is Castle Stalker, on an island in Loch Linnhe. It's "Castle Aaaargh" from Monty Python & the Holy Grail.
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
Stunning photos Peter. Particularly the one of you daughter on the beach, and also the one of the abandoned castle with the rays of light shining through the window.
Nice macro image of the bee, although I think it looks more evil than smiley
Liri - I'm almost ashamed to admit, I've never seen Holy Grail
I love those Pele towers too. They knew how to build a fort in those days!
I wonder if it's visible from Beinn Sgulaird, which sits to the east of it, all on it's own. The hills in between aren't very high so it's a possibility. I no longer have photos ( deleted as they contain the ex ) but I'm sure I've climbed it. I'll just have to go back on a good day and get more to see if I can see it
It might be clearly visible from further up Loch Linnhe too. There's a duo of Munros on the west side of the loch that I have my eye on for a longer outing in spring or summer. I'll have to arrange clear blue skies to give me a good chance of a photo

Those abandoned castles look as if they'd make perfect film sets.
Love your Scottish castle, Fairy!

Liri, Castle Stalker is in such a beautiful situation. Much photographed.
Given that it's off Appin do you see it from your cottage on Lismore?
No, but driving from Oban to Port Appin to catch the passenger ferry, we feel we're nearly home when we see it in the distance.
