You are lucky to have goldfinches Zenjeff, they are such pretty birds.  We have exactly the same behaviour from our gold finches with the pigeons hoovering up the mess below.  You can get feeders with saucers attached at the bottom of them, but there was some question about how effective these saucers actually are.

    See original post
I've tried a few things for the last three years, the saucers are not very good the wind blows the spilt seed off, I fixed kitchen type bowls to them, it worked in a fashion but the rain collected and it ended up a smelly mess,
This is my latest design, I only made it a few days ago so its still in test mode but I think it will be ok.

I love long tailed tits GD - possibly my favourite bird  image

We used to get them regularly in the garden round the corner, but they've been absent in this garden - so far.

Goldfinches have always been a bit scarce anyway, but a pair briefly visited last winter, so I'll keep fingers crossed. Lovely pix Jenjeff. We had a bit of debate last year about whether it was worth investing in nyger seed, and many people felt the sunflower hearts were enough, so I'm not sure whether I should try nyger seed. I'll see if the hearts on their own work, and take a view on it later.image

We have a small National Trust garden across the road from us and lots of woodland etc, so it might take a while to get them visiting, but after getting the nuthatches last year, I'll stay optimistic. They're quite uncommon generally in Scotland, so it's great to have them coming in regularly

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Martin-f, that's an interesting design.  Hope it works for you.

Do you have a long lens, Fairy, or a garden bird hide?  I can't get close enough to my nutties to photograph them.  They're lovely - such neat little birds.  image

I'm pretty sure I was listening to a couple of linnets twittering to each other this morning.  I only got a glimpse as they flew from one hawthorn to another, but I think that's what they were...

Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.

Hi Liri, thanks I'm quite sure it will be ok I put a fair bit of thought into its design, but time will tell fingers crossed,
I don't have a big lens but ive designed the pond and bird feed station so it can be viewed from my living room window, the window will soon be replaced with a patio door, the pictures below was taken through glass the patio doors will make photography better for me,
Yes nice little birds the nuthatch I don't see many round here mainly blackbirds robin sparrows goldfinch blue great coal tits, a few pictures should give you a idea of my living room view,
I only recently installed the pond its nice to see the birds using it already, the feed station is up on the right ponds below it,
I have a CCTV camera above the pond it alerts me when any visitors turn up, when I find time I will do the same with the feed station my camera is always to hand.

No - nothing special Martin. I have a bridge camera with a fairly decent lens, and those photos were taken through a rear window. The cage feeder is less than twenty feet away from the house. All the birds are so used  to it - and me - that they go in and out of it quite happily,  even if I'm out there pottering  image

  • Hi Fairygirl, I have a couple of bridge cameras ideal for quick shots round the garden, ive recently bought a DSLR Nikon D3300 ive yet to get to grips with it but managed to catch some nice macro photos with it,

I'm have about the same distance of 20ft the lens I have on the Nikon is not ideal so I'm still using the bridge for the window shots,

The birds are not used to this new station but I have fed them for the last few years I'm hoping they will return.

  • Martin, I really like that seed catcher you have made. I always have a big mess to clean up every spring.

I'm always happy to hear the Nuthatches coming to me. I love listening to them. We have the small red and larger white breasted.

Sparrows were crazy in the backyard yesterday afternoon.

  • Hello Guernsey Donkey2,

Sure, you can name me the bird man, just not the crazy bird man. Oh, actually I have two ladies (sisters) across my street, I named them the crazy cat ladies several years ago. lol And their cats follow me all around my yard, every day, every single day.

  • I remember hearing of a film called Dr Doolittle who talked to the animals ......... no bird pictures today, unless you can count this one in - not in our garden but a heron eating lunch at the local nature reserve, sorry if I have shown it before.imageimageIt was quite a struggle to swallow as the poor eel kept on wriggling out of the herons gullet.
