I think the edit thingy is being aloof tonight!

This is the letter I was trying to attach earlier.  It was sent by Bertha Brewster in 1913 to the Daily Telegraph:

    Sir,

Everyone seems to agree upon the necessity of putting a stop to Suffragist outrages; but no one seems certain how to do so.  There are two, and only two, ways this can be done.  Both will be effectual.

    1.    Kill every woman in the United Kingdom.

    2.    Give women the vote.

                                                              Yours truly,

                                                            Bertha Brewster

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

  • I certainly came across dove as a verb in my childhood in rural Suffolk ... but a lot of the early immigrants into America were from Suffolk.

The Government's leaked regional economic breakdown of the impact of leaving the EU is the latest news of ...unadulterated joy!

The figures come from a study carried out by Whitehall officials, which found Brexit will leave Britain worse off under every single scenario projected by the government.

It calculated the impact on economic growth under three scenarios, a hard 'no deal' Brexit, a comprehensive trade deal and remaining in the single market and customs union.

These leaked figures show the North East of England would be hardest hit under all three scenarios - with economic growth reduced by 16% if there's no deal and 3% under the softest option.

Northern Ireland would face a 12% GDP slump if there's no deal.

AND it should be remembered, NI, unlike the NE, voted to remain!

But of course, we will all have the comfort of a more expensive but midnight-blue passport, so beloved by Rees-Mogg, that sincere admirer... of food banks.

Mind you, as I didn't move to Suffolk until I was 4 I accept no responsibility whatsoever for the outcome of the adventuring by earlier Suffolk residents image

  • Thank you for the links, Dove.  Fascinating history!  I wonder if you, personally, have any relations in America, famous or otherwise?

For me, however, Suffolk is, and will always be, Constable Country.  I love the Arcadian beauty of his work! image

Though I have only visited Suffolk once, I became, and remain, rather enamoured of every bit of it.  image

Amazing history, Dove!  Thank you for the links.

It never fails to impress me how people will leave any beautiful place they live in for uknown lands, when their lives become unbearably difficult: oppression, poverty, WAR.

Happily, history shows such people mostly succeed and prosper because they are not afraid to work as hard as it's imaginable and, of course, because they don't want to go back to the places of extreme unhappiness they've decided to abandon or flee from.

Naturally, they take their language with them, their faith, their customs and their recipes!  They all help them build a home away from home and make them feel whole again.

Very interesting, indeed, Dove!  Thank you.

I totally agree with you, Artemis, people, like birds, will migrate in order to survive.

Since last night, I've been wondering where, exacly, our Cheddar Man came from? image
