Good wren observations @Fire . I guess keeping nest boxes near to dense cover will be a good idea if that's how they fledge. Now that my hedges have grown in a bit more I might try putting up a box or two for them.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

@wild edges that would be good if we didn't have so many cats. There's nowhere in any of our gardens safe from cats apart from where the wren chose. Some denser planting by the back door would be useful, but it's a concrete side return, so, not so easy. The gardens are only three metres wide, so it's not so easy. The babies are constantly calling still, which is like a beacon to cats. :s

Saw this in the local press today ... I’ve never heard of wild polecats in East Anglia in the past  50 years  .... does anyone else think it’s a ‘polecat ferret’
    or even a polecat x ferret ?

The markings certainly pass the polecat tests. Good news if it really is but I suspect quite a few covert reintroductions of species like this are going on around the country.

    "Why I Can't Grow Phlox":

12 slugs on one small plant, in a pot, two foot off the ground.  It was an orgy. It wasn't even dark yet, ffs.

They've just come back from the pub, can't you tell? They drank it dry. Drown? Ha!

    Great picture.
This should make it easier to pick all at once. I have had the same with one of the plants and after 2 days wondering why the plant suddenly looked so poorly, I went down into the garden half past 4 and filled an entire jar.  :)

    I my garden.

Of course, there's the re-wilding at Wild Ken Hill, but that's quite a distance ... and then there's whatever is going on at the estate where this is  https://www.theguntonarms.co.uk/ ... I have no evidence but get the feeling the owner has maverick tendencies.

A pub with paintings of dinosaurs humping hung on the walls? Yeah that does seem fairly maverick  :#  I've seen a few 'polecats' locally here but sadly always dead on the roads. We're in one of the strong population areas for them though.
