I tried to post this morning, while on the train between Leeds and Newcastle, but I see it's not there... signal was a bit iffy. Went to visit Mum, plus sister, and older niece as a bonus - she lives in Beijing and I hadn't seen her for 10 years or so. It was great to catch up, though a bit of a worry that she's had to have a cataract operation at the age of 39. Mum was very yonderly, but pleased to see me, even though she didn't really know who I was...
Not a lot of watering done here either; retentive soil, shady garden, high rainfall. Only stuff in pots, new plantings and veg get extra water. I think I'd trade the inconvenience for a garden with a bit more sun though, to be honest.
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
Fairy - thanks for the heads up - I'll have a look on iPlayer Enjoy your walk tomorrow
Liri - tough with your mum
PS - trust me - a damper garden is easier to deal with - dry, dry, dry is tough and time consuming. Things (which shouldn't) go yellow & crisp very, very quickly. My Yorkshire garden was much easier than my East Anglian garden.
Heaven is ... sitting in the garden with a G&T and a cat while watching the sun go down
Good gardening day, weeded and deadheaded most of the end bed and finished the upper middle bed. I was given a red and white dahlia for judging the garden show so I planted it in the middle bed.
Then, at 4.30 we left to go to a choral concert in a ruined abbey. It was a Dutch choir on a singing holiday. They'd asked my house sitting friend to play the keyboard to accompany them. She is a pianist and runs a local choir. They were pretty good, but not many in the audience. Dutch and English, think there were only 2 French people. But while we were there the rain started, lucky a bit of the abbey had a roof!
Had chicken chasseur with beans and cabbage from the garden while we watched Tatton Flower Show, but we missed the first half, back to late. I recorded the 2nd half while I was cooking. Snickers ice cream for pud.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
We were supposed to have a few showers around midday........ Nothing. Waited all afternoon as I need to spray a bindweedy patch. Still nothing. Deicided to meet Possum and buy her some new tops in the sales. Still no rain.
Eating dinner and there was an almighty clap of thunder right over the house which made us all jump and sent Bonzo doggy diving under all our feet and then a long and heavy downpour with more rumbling. There I was thinking the last few hot dry days were good for drying up slugs and here they'll all be rehydrated again.
You still around Pat? For some reason Im wide awake and can't get back to sleep. Ive made a warm drink and come back to bed; while the kettle boiled I went for a wander around the garden in nightie and bare feet in the moonlight. I heard tawny owls earlier but now everything's quiet and still and quite magical.
we had very good fish and chips on the beach then went onto the pier for a drink - rubbed shoulders with Richard Coles who is doing his usual Saturday morning Radio 4 programme live from there tomorrow.
The tide was high and the sea was flat calm and very beautiful.
There's that tawny owl calling again ...
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
Good morning all. Looks like it is gonna be another beautiful day
happy weekend
i had a good day yesterday cutting back, nettle and bramble pulling and watering! It really is a mission doing the watering! Thank goodness we are not on a meter!
bad news is I am back to work tomorrow, good news is I am off most of August
have a great weekend everyone albeit rain or shine! X

No rain here, been very hot today. Lots of watering being done as quite a few new plants in. Showers have missed us so far.

Liri - good to catch up with family.
Topbird - have you tried a dry garden à la Beth Chatto? Hers is stunning. Some pics here - http://s211.photobucket.com/user/Obelixx_be/media/160527%20Beth%20Chatto%20-%20Essex/P1190401_zpstt08sas3.jpg.html?sort=2&o=0
