Thanks for the compliments and hints, everyone! I hadn't heard of Japanese Boro stitching, @Obelixx - just looked it up. That looks promising, as does @Fire's & @JennyJ's ideas for finding stretch denim. I think decorative stitching is maybe the way to go - there seem to be quite a few books on line about it...
We did a workshop on Boro in January @Liriodendron. We took a base piece of fabric and attached random strips and pieces of fabric using machine or hand-stitching and then decorated by doing some of the more elaborate Sashiko stitches - circles, spirals etc - but also European stem stitch and chain stitch to outline particular bits of fabric or shapes.
Some have made cushion pads, others handbags or shoulder bags, pencil or make-up cases. It's an endlessly adaptable and quietly satisfying activity with great results and doesn't have to be just the traditional peasant indigo blue tho that does look great.

I made a cushion cover, complete with zip! Very pleased with the finished result, but despite looking at a youtube tutorial before I started, it nearly went very wrong! I machine tacked the seam with the zip, but didn’t unpick it before sewing the rest of the seams. Ended up with no obvious way of opening the zip and turning it the right way round! Luckily I had left the zip slightly open, and with a lot of fiddling, and keyhole surgery, I managed to sort it out.
Thanks @chicky - it's supposed to be a "brightening up a neutral room" fabric, but I'm not sure whether it's too much of a good thing... the living room is the only room now waiting to be decorated, but we think we'll be paying a professional to do it because I can't get the soot stains off the ceiling...
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
Having had a blanket at birth I had a request for another one for the Christening again with blue in it. This one was slightly different in as much as the white wool had sparkle in it which sadly does not show on the photos and 30 squares in total compared to the usual 20 squares.

Hello @Pat E - good to "see" you too!
