Those are great Jessum. My birthday's on Dec 28th and my mum "does it" in October but there's never been cake. I must mention it.

A Chinese guest at my wedding was admiring my cake and saying "pillow", "no it's cake" "Yes" he nodded "pillow". His English wasn't great image I once had to stop him putting custard on his spuds in the canteen. Poor Mr Tsu. image We confused the life out of him.

Thanks for your kind comments.  The latest cake with the irises was supposed to come out as a stained glass design.  I would sketch out the shapes with an edible "felt tip" pen and then I would pipe black icing over this in order to make it look like lead.  I was then going to colour it all in.

I just got so carried away and put in too much detail and I didn't want to spoil the effect.

In order to "paint" the cake I mixed either gel or powdered food colouring with vodka and simply painted it on.  I just had to be careful not to use water as if I was painting on paper!  The vodka evaporates and leaves the colour - I didn't drink any honest!  It took me about 13 hours and it was so much fun, so relaxing.  I just had ITV 3 on and listened to Miss Marple or suchlike as I worked away.

If I can't be in the garden, I can do something like that.  My next project is a 50th wedding anniversary cake for a friend.  It will be a surprise.

Those cakes are so beautiful, you are very talented.

I made cakes for each of my four children's weddings, but they look amateurish compared with yours. Yours are amazing. You could make a career of it.

Wow, Jessum!  I agree with Lizzie - you could definitely make a career of cake decorating.  The iris one is really different.  Beautiful too!  image
