'Skin so soft' is a brilliant preventative, do not know if its a cure.. Tried Jungle formulae too and have to say 'Skin so soft' is more effective...
There is also a lil electronic gadject you might want to look out for. It emits a high pitched hum which is the same freuquency as that of the Male mosquito, now the Female mozzi bites us cos she needs blood to noursh her pregnancy , so once she is preggers the last thing she needs is a male mozzi. So if you wear the lil gadjet you have a range of about 15 ft all around you that is a mozzi free zone..
It works too, even out in Afghanistan cos I road tested it.. I found it in an airport shop along with the sunglasses and lotions..
To relieve the swelling of the bite, rub with an ice cube and apply Calamine lotion that you have kept in the fridge.. Scratching them causes swelling do to an outpouring of Histamine, hence a Antihistamine tablet or cream may be of use if you have many bite...and Yes I am a registered nurse..
I live half a mile from a big lake the lil blighters are in my garden all year round, honest...
Horseflies one of the banes of my life. They have this ability to sneak up silently on you and then you feel the red hot needle. I've even been bitten through my jeans - still if they can get through horse skin then jeans are nothing. I live one door along from stables so I am constantly on red alert when in the garden. They seem to be drawn by sweat - yeah yeah never mind the old adage - ladies do sweat. Thanks for the tip re Skin So Soft. I'm going to get some.
Cacoethes: An irresistible urge to do something inadvisable
Lantana it is exactly that. It was a body lotion and there was a bath oil I think. Then everyone realised that it had the added attraction of being an insect repellant. Woohoo! I'm not one for scenty things but it is quite a nice smell too. I had stuff in the W.Indies and it was rank. There you were all lovely with your perfume and then you sprayed yourself with dinosaur killer! My husband had an unfortunate incident after his shower one evening because he wasn't careful where he sprayed!!! I'd no idea he could sing like that!
Yes with the red face, yes with the tissue thing. I cut the grass and I look like I've been playing squash!!
I take antihistamines when I camp and a bit before too , I'm both scout and guide leader.
Last year that had no effect, we were camped on Poole (close to visit brownsea). I got bitten on ankle and it swelled to double size. Poole A&E was visited:(
Bites still bad today. Think I'll order some skin so soft too.
Witch Hazel gel is cheap and a very soothing and cooling treatment for insect bites. Has the added advantage of being non sticky once dry and it's clear so no white patches. Really does take the itch away for a couple of hours. It's the only treatment OH will use because he hates sticky ointments.
