Nanny Beach– I always keep dried lentils, peas, beans, chickpeas etc. in my cupboard and as I was deciding what my experimental crop would be this year – I thought why not try lentils, if the seeds hadn't sprouted in my test, I probably wouldn't have bothered.  From what I've read on the internet you need a lot of plants to get a sufficient amount of lentils but I will just try to see if I can get any and then decide if it's worth allotting more space next year.

    Black raspberries sound fab :-)

Fif2, yes, framberry is (apparently!) a cross between a strawberry and a raspberry. At the moment mine has green fruits rather like alpine strawberries.

Did you buy the framberries as plants or sow seeds Aster2?

I bought a plant from a garden centre this spring.

Thanks, I'll keep my eyes open then :-)

  • The yacon I planted last year has come up again.  So have 2 of the 3 tubers I put in pots.  I now have lots of plants coming up. The slugs haven't touched them.  I am looking forward to trying them in different ways and getting the inulin from them.  They have been completely troublefree.

My garlic cress has been another success.  Pick it every month except January.  Great addition to salad bowl as is sorrel, which I use a lot for soups as well. However, my oca was mostly eaten by woodlice underground, although One plant has reappeared this year.  Only one tomatillo germinated, you need two.  Chinese artichokes produced nothing and have not reappeared, but then it was in shade.Ground cherries were good last year but didn't germinate this year .  Slugs had the samphire last year, none geminated this year.  Will try again.  Babington Leeks very prolific, but moregarlic than leek.Hope young leeks will be more palatable.

    Have learnt a lot.

I had problems with my tomatillos germinating this year. Tried two batches - not a sausage! Garlic cress sounds good - thanks for the ideas :-)

  • Sorry to hear yours didn't live up to expectations either.  Hope for better next year.
