Never thought of growing melons outside Mel M. Now I've got a bit more space with the allotment might try it. I love quince and medlar. One of my friends used to have a medlar tree and we made medlar cheese every year. I've just planted a quince in the front garden - Cydonia oblonga 'Meeches Prolific' and it has lots of fruit but probably should remove most of them as it's its first year. I love flowering quince too - they bring colour to the garden when most other things are dormant and have the bonus of edible fruit.
I'll look into Gaultheria as it's something I've heard of but never tried and root parsley sounds interesting too.
Thanks to everyone for their contributions - I'm learning lots and I'm sure others are too. :-)
Glad to hear you Capsicum pubescens lasted so long LeifUK. Hope mine lives half that long! How did you overwinter it without a greenfly infestation? I overwintered my chillies for the first time this winter and the greenflies were a pain...
I tried soya, variety of seed specially bred for british climbes, they got to about 3 inches tall, keeled over and died, coffee beans zero germination, crystal apple cucumbers, (did lemon last year) Dont know if they count as unusall, just a bit different maybe?
I've got coffee plants as a house plant, they are thriving but I didn't grow them from seed. Crystal apple cucumbers kook great, I've seen them but haven't got round to growing them yet. I guess unusual things have a slightly bigger fail rate as it's more trial and error. Good luck this year. :-)
Tarragon is one of the few herbs I don't grow. Don't how why really as I love it in cooking. Must rectify that! Have tried summer savory but didn't germinate well, but will try again...
Hello all I'm trying Optunia (prickly pear), wild strawberry, small olive tree, peanuts, bell pepper and gonna try and germinate some Papaya 'golden' seeds and see how they turn out
I love wild strawberries - I grow White Soul. We've been watching Jungle Book today with the kids - they'll be fascinated that someone is growing a prickly pear - how do you grow one??
Interesting thread. This year my experimental veg are lentils and peanuts. Never tried lentils before so don't really know what to expect. I did grow peanuts a few years ago and got about a handful. I like to try something different every year regardless of success.
The plants are more bush like so they don't need a trellis, they like sandy soil and warm temperatures. The blossom sends out 'pegs' down to the soil and the peanut then grows underground.

How do you grow peanuts? Presumably a bit like peas?

dogwooddays,

A row of peanut plants.
Peanuts that were harvested before being cured.
