Just got in, absolutely soaked, after shopping/doctor trip in the RAIN. We needed it, I suppose... the rain, I mean. And the shopping...
I've modified my squirrel-proof bird feeder to incorporate a beer can (empty). Photo below. It's a large diameter feeder and the volume of nuts it took was wasteful - a lot of birds can use it at once, but if it's wet there's a huge amount of waste from the nuts going rotten. So the beer can, top removed & hole in bottom, forms an inner "tube" in the middle of the mesh cylinder, and I don't need as many peanuts - but just as many birds can use it.
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
Someone brought a couple of hedgehogs to Lismore, the Scottish island where our cottage is, a few years ago & kept them caged in his garden to eat his slugs. They escaped, of course, and are now breeding madly - which you might think is a good thing, except that they are not native to the island and predate the many ground-nesting birds... I'm quite tempted to capture some and re-home them to West Yorks. They probably wouldn't understand the dialect though...

Liri - there was a hedgehog eradication scheme on one of the outer Hebridean Islands. As on Lismore, they had been introduced and were eating the eggs of the ground nesting birds. I think some of the hedgehogs were evacuated to the mainland where people did want them.
Evening all, Just had a really heavy rain shower so I wont have to water the garden tonight.
Nanna Duty today, took youngest grandaughter into town and we had a look round the shops to pass the time, cafe and sweet shop included. Bought new shoes and a couple of tops for my trip to East Sussex, keeping fingers crossed for some decent weather. Only two more sleeps.
Interesting, Joyce - wonder if anyone on Lismore has seriously thought of rounding up and rehoming some hedgehogs? (It was a facetious suggestion on my part...) Luckily there are lots of little offshore islands where some of the birds can nest undisturbed.
Philippa, I wonder if I know your sister... guess where I live!
Incidentally, someone else on Lismore introduced hares about 10 years ago, "for sport". Unbelievable on an island famed for its wild flowers, and which has no rabbits (still, I'm happy to say).

Obelixx. I unreservedly apologise.
what a varied feast you've provided there. Must get some cat food and start feeding Spikey and friends.
Afternoon, forkers all!

Haven't seen a hedgehog here for 2 years.

I'm quite tempted to capture some and re-home them to West Yorks. They probably wouldn't understand the dialect though...
By the way, we're not so desperate we actually drink Asda Smart Price lager. It went in the slug trap!
