Thanks all. We don't know Dudley's history other than him being found on the street as a stray and captured by the local authority dog warden in Maidenhead where he spent several weeks in kennels. No name, no collar, no microchip, no nothing. A familiar story for many rescue dogs I guess.
He then went to an RSPCA foster home for a week where he had daily 'treatments' including being chipped, vacinated, shaved, back to the vets to check the wound etc. Pretty much every time he got in a car he was either going somewhere new or getting some kind of treatment. A week after going into foster care he came home to us. I made sure he didn't have to go in a car again for a few weeks so he wouldn't be unsettled by the uncertainty of that.
Every small noise in the house would send him into a frenzy but over time that has subsided. He's becoming more comfortable in his surroundings. We've had to be very slow in building up the time he has been left alone. He would shutdown when left. I guess this points him being left for long periods in his previous life. He certainly doesn't like being shut in. Initially he would go and sit by any closed door, even if we were in the room with him, until someone got up and opened the door. He wouldn't leave the room once the door was opened but would immediately relax. He's very protective of the house and clearly missed out on puppy socialisation which are challenges that we are overcoming. He's a real character - aren't they all!
Thanks scroggin. Yes, I've seen those jackets and they're a good idea. You are still reliant on other owners awareness and consideration of course but they definitely a help. Dudley is not aggressive at all. Actually it's quite the opposite. He just wants to play with every dog he sees and goes up them them and barks, and barks, and barks !
This is where his lack of socialisation as a puppy challenges him as he doesn't always read the other dogs body language - especially those that don't want to play! He's getting there though and is proving to be a great addition to the household.

Pink Lily, he's adorable.
He's lovely. One of ours always be looking through the front door, until the late afternoon, then he would relax properly.
Willow, the one on the right.
