Well done chris, you deserve a 1st. as far as I am concerned I have never had such a good crop of beetroot as I did this year after following your module advice. Your spuds look very presentable too.
I noticed a neighbour had banked his beetroot - do you do this too. The banks looked similar to potato banking which we always do.
Hope all is well i dont bank my beets just take them when i need them
They stay good in the garden until at least January and taste great
Well chuffed this year as i have grown five types of beetroot and planted from modules so can endorsh any gardener who is in doubt, as my crops this year have been 95% module planted and a great return
Pictur today shows my fifth beet choigia which when cut show red and pink rings and is gorg in soups as it is sweet and when cooked turns orange brill
Happy gardening and to those who have the space plant module next year
January? Just how many beetroot do you grow Chris? I have now harvested all of mine - I have eaten or given away the majority of them but have a small stash in the freezer. I will be planting more next year, but can you tell me which varieties you grow please? I can't find my empty seed packet which may have been thrown away.
I do still have a lot in the ground, planted around 250 but they were all planted at different times so I can pick and choose what I want and when depending on size
Varieties grown this year are cylindra, globe, paublo, golden and the last choigia
There are dozens of seed names and the above have hit the spot for me this year But who knows what seed I might pick up next year and go for six
I agree Verdun, but I have to say that the beetroot seeds that my OH sowed - well he just sows them directly into the soil and far too close and doesn't bother to thin them. I followed Chris's recommendation for module growing and had a half decent crop. I am sure with the right attention to detail sowing directly into the soil is just as successful and as you say less hassle. Our soil is very lumpy and perhaps when my OH has retired he can spend some time sifting it to help to make the soil finer.
Thank you for sharing your seed names chris 172. I find all the seed names let alone the various companies quite bewildering when I am in the GC.
We have to follow the regime that suits us best Verdun - after much trial and error we hopefully get there in the end. I am melting here - how's the weather with you?
