I love freshly boiled beetroot, still warm from the pan - some people say it tastes too earthy but if you wash them well before cooking then the soil will wash away too. I love peeling them whilst still warm too and I can't wait for ours to be harvested.  My husband thinks they are an awful vegetable but we each have our own favourites.

Cut them into thin strips, and stir fry with other veg and black bean sauce or whatever. Or slice thinly and add to risotto or stews. White beetroot is less colourful, but I found yellow too earthy.

All that talk of beetroot is making me hungry.  That veg looks so healthy. Lovely big cold frame there!

  • Not picking beetroot here either, but I must say they are looking good - the ones grown in the modules are far more advanced than the direct sowings in the soil - hope they taste as good as they look Chris!

    Hi all

the beetroot leaves are gorgeous mixed with lettuce try it you will never leave them again until picking.

Just a leaf or two off the odd plant bagged up in a plastic sealed bag and they keep really well however I am picking every day from the allotment

spinach leaves, perpetual spin leaves, chard, beetroot leaves, baby gem leaves amazing with a little dressing

try it it's worth it and you will save pounds

    happy gardening

I'm amazed they are unnetted. My side hedge is infested with sparrows, and they adore beetroot leaves. Even though I net mine, they have discovered that if they land on the netting, it pushes it down, and they can then sneak their greedy little beaks through the netting and nibble the leaves. They leave parsnip, beans and carrot alone, it's just beetroot and brassicas that they like.

  • Cheeky sparrows you have LeifUK - they know when they are onto a good thing working out how to get through the netting for a tasty meal. We don't have that problem here but do have a problem with pigeons pecking at calibrese so we build a mesh frame over them.

Another day at the lottie and more beetroot to plant

Atip to all who grow in modules is that i grow seed on until they are ready to plant but before planting snip off the extra plants not needed.

they are additional to the salad for the tea tonight and are yum

planted another tray of cylindra today to add to my favourite plant beetroot to keep me going throughout the season
