I'm starting more stuff in modules this year. It's a learning curve put means there's stuff to plant out when other vegs are harvested.
Beetroot me thinks is an under rated veg, most have only eaten it pickled. I tend to steam it and make a cheese sauce but will now try roasting or eat with a salad.
So brave Chris, I'm with LeifUK. I have to net mine otherwise I get raided by pigeons and sparrows! Love growing beets though as they are my best crop and taste so good and last through the winter, what's not to like?
"The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it." Sir Terry Pratchett
I got exactly one beetroot plant from the row I sowed direct in March, so I sowed some more in modules earlier this week. Nothing that I sowed direct germinated, in fact. I don't know if it was the cold weather or if the seedlings were eaten - slugs, snails, wood pigeons, squirrels, jackdaws, you name it we've got it on the allotment. Fingers crossed for the module-sown plants, I'd love to be able to make beetroot soup from homegrown veg.
Good luck Aster2 - I also tried the module sowing for the first time this year and they have all germinated and are now growing nicely in our veg patch - I am looking forward to harvesting a few in a couple of weeks time - as Chris says the leaves are also tasty in a side salad.
just an update on the beetroot front as I will be taking my first from the lottie this week and really excited as its my fav of all I grow and I grow at least thirty plus fruit and veg a year in my allotment.
First beets of the year simply wrapped in foil roasted with thyme salt pepper rape seed oil and sliced with a block of crumbled goats cheese Ab Fab
I will be pulling the first of my beetroot this week too Chris - grown in modules as you suggested. I pulled a couple last week but they were too small so fingers crossed that some are mature enough now. No fancy cooking for me though - just cleaned & boiled/steamed until tender - love the taste whilst they are still warm - yum!
Those look good Chris - ours were very tasty but not as uniform in shape as yours are. However, they are far more advanced than the seeds that were sown directly into our soil.

Thanks, GD, that's encouraging.

Hi all
Well that time has come and cannot wait for tea tomorrow for the first of the season
Roasted beetroot starter with goats cheese, and a drizzle of rape oil salt and pepper yum

Looking good, Chris. Only just planted mine out a couple of weeks ago to follow autumn onions.
