  • Hi

zoomer44 I have started my chillis and aubergines for the year. I am lucky to have some grow lights to help assist with low light levels at this time of year. So far all have germinated within ten days and growing nicely indoors with warmth and without legginess so far. Growing chilli hot lemon, cayanetta and prairie fire and aubergine black beaut. All will end up in the warmth of the greenhouse later on in the year.

today spent most of the day in the balmy greenhouse (17 degrees when the sun came out ) even  though it was snowing outside. cleaned up my over wintering perennials grown from seed, pinched out my autumn sown sweet peas (ate the tops which were yum!) and did a bit of watering. Pots of spinach growing back into life so will be harvesting soon.Hope to get down to the allotment tomorrow. Spring is definately in the air!

  • Hi all

Had a few hours at my plot yesterday, did a bit of weeding and burning dried sweetcorn stems and rubbish, it was a good day for a bonfire nice  and bright and windy!Got hailed on though.

There are 5 vacant plots so far this year, one of them is a whole plot nearer the entrance. I would like to have it but I have put my heart and soul into my half plot so am in a bit of a dilemma! The whole plot is not in a bad state and has 2 sheds though it is shadier from the trees... thoughts anyone??

Zoomer, I lost my phone out horse riding, found it 5 days later, one of the locals had picked it up and put it on top of a gate post. It still worked despite being out in the rain!!

Ginagibbs  , do you have time for a whole plot ? That’s the main question to ask ones self

If yes , do hold on to your other plot while you tranfer stuff across and get the new one ready ?

Good luck with what ever you do image

  • Ginagibbs are you allowed to keep your half plot as well as take on a new one?  do you have a photo of the other plot?   how much shadier is it the whole plot or is there some sunny areas  - 2 sheds is good - and not a bad time to take it on to get the plot prepared

GWRS when you shredded the hawthorn was the chippings spiky? - wondering whether the brambles would do well have a small shredded in garrage

  • Hi Garden Girl,

my current half plot is always basking in sun, the other plot has trees and houses that shade it  at the top end, but the previous plot holder grew some good crops. The bottom half is sunnier. Time is the main worry, I work full time and have a large garden. I just find a half plot not enough space for a decent amount of spuds/onions etc so I run out of them very quicklyimage

Gardengirl , Hawthorn twigs once shredded are not spiky , give it a go ?

Ginagibbs  , sounds like you are in quandary? Would the person who has your other half plot be interested in the vacant one , then you could extend yours , just a thought ?

  • GWRS, that would be perfect, I have been on at our allotment officer to let me know if either of my close neighbours decide to give up image

Did my first sowing of the year, broadbeans!! image

  • Did a lot of building yesterday of compost bins so getting there even sorted out the post for some new nest boxes as nearly national nestbox week

Saw a butterfly on way into plot and a bee came and visited my plot landing on the blue tarpaulin

    Lots of wildlife around

Thanks GWRS will try shredding brambles when cut them

That would be good Ginagibbs if they would swap plots

  • Thanks to your suggestion GWRS, I now have a full size plot.imageimageimageimage

I wrote to the allotment officer to see if one of my neighbours would be willing to move, and the guy who has the top half of mine is moving!!! I cant say I blame him, the plot he is going to is really a blank canvas, freshly rotivated and has a new shed. He has a heart murmur so I am sure he will find this plot less challenging.

OMG so excited!!!  now I can plan a whole new garden!!

I will get some photo's next time I am there so I can show you.

Found a new source for pallet collars so will do a big raised bed area in new plotimage
