GWRS, we stayed at a place called Agde, it's not far from Beziers on the Mediterranean coast. We flew to Beziers. .
Went to the plot yesterday, the grass paths were knee deep ..not to bad everywhere else. Did quite a lot of weeding and hoeing. The guy on neighboring plot watered the GH whilst I was away, ever so pleased, one plant has a small tom on and there are tiny chilli's developing on another plant. All the sweetcorn has germinated, a bit hit and miss with other stuff though - a couple of squash and pumpkin , one cucumber, no gourdes and coquettes just poking through.
Outside seedlings in modules did better, lettuce, leeks and beetroot can be planted out now. What look like hundreds of nasturtium, have germinated under the fruit tree's, thought I'd pot what's needed of these and compost the rest.
Asparagus is a tad bit disappointing, less than half of the crowns, in one bed have started growing and none in another bed.
Aster, it's not to late to sow more french beans. I was going to sow some more tomorrow.
Spent most of the afternoon on the plot, weeding and planting out. The guy from neighboring plot was there. Both sides watered the GH whilst I was away, one in the morning, the other checked it at night, I brought them both seeds and chocs back from France.
Discovered black/greenfly on the fruit bushes, so, nipped off the most affected shoots and blasted them with the hose. Pea weevil has also moved in on the broad beans, they are dwarf one's, will they need supports?
Took the strimmer but couldn't get it started, I think the spark plug has been flooded, not sure what to do about that?
Is anyone harvesting anything. I've rubarb and globe artichokes ready for picking.
Artichokes... I'd thought I'd be able to buy some plants in a GC, but they never had any, so I got seeds from Moreveg and out of six four have germinated. (I like Moreveg, they have unusual varieties and the seeds I've had germinated well.) Too late for a harvest this year, but something to look forward to next year.
I also have a battery powered strimmer, so can't help with a petrol one.
The fungal disease is spreading through the allotment, it seems to affect French and runner beans and possibly (though not too badly at the moment) tomatoes. Is the weather this year particularly bad for fungal diseases?
I've been a few times, GWRS, to take advantage of my RHS membership (it's my first year) and I always enjoyed the visits. In the end I didn't go today, because the idea of spending the Bank Holiday Sunday on the M25 wasn't terribly appealing. So I went to our local GC and the lady on the advice desk said that the problems I have with the beans and tomatoes look like cold damage. Phew.
There were crowds on our allotment site yesterday, but only one other allotmenteer today - I'm puzzled by how the people who are almost never there manage to tend to their plots - we shall see come harvest time, I suppose.
I'm bone-tired after three days of digging. I need to pot up some plants but can hardly lift my fingers to type. On the other hand it's really nice to be physically tired for once - I've got a desk job, so this is a pleasant change.
