Haven't looked back at every post, so don't know if the mystery was resolved.....but I can confirm that the cause was the factory in Carlisle being flooded and has recently resumed limited production.
Two things. Your gingerbread cake was delicious Obelixx - I esp. liked the fresh ginger in it but it was a bit of a faff to make - so many bowls and plates! However, it was well worth the making!
Second thing - Tesco's here has stopped selling McVities ginger nuts after a few weeks of being unavailable! Quelle horreur! What are we going to do now???

Hi Hogweed, just saw this post, being a ginger nut lover myself....if you have an Aldi nearby, go there. They have gingernuts. I went through the same disbelieving horror a few weeks ago when I didnt find them at Tesco....but was saved by Aldi
I was listening to the radio this afternoon and the great gingernut crisis was being discussed. Apparently one of the biggest biccie factories in the UK is near Carlisle and suffered badly in the floods. They don't think they will get back to full production before the end of March.
Shouldn't there be some sort of National Reserve stashed away somewhere in case of flood, storm and tempest ........... not to do so strikes me as negligence by HM Government

Glad you enjoyed it Hogweed. I tend to use fewer bowls than many recipes think are needed.
Think I might make us one next week.

Must have ginger nuts in the boat when summer evenyually arrives! Aldi's are pretty good though I must say.
It's official! I've just heard a piece about it on the Jo Whiley show on Radio 2. I hope dark choc digestives aren't affected.
