Sorry, meant to say great pics so far.  David you must have an amazing zoom/telescope and a tripodimage.  Fairy, you're further away but it looks like the same moon here in Scotland tooimage

  • The penumbra (partially shaded outer region of the shadow cast by the Earth) does appear at that time, conifer.  The umbra (main shadow) strikes the edge of the Moon at about 2.13 creeps over the surface until it covers the Moon completely at about 3.15.  The moon will remain completely in the umbra until about 4.23.  The full shadow will creep (from top left to bottom right) across the surface until about 5.21 when the Moon will again be in the penumbra.  At about 6.22 it will be completely out of the penumbra shadow.  We won't see that though as the Moon sets at about 6am.

Clear sky here. I've fleeced the dahlias.

  • BLT, the 'supermoon' is what you are seeing now.  All it means is that the moon is at it's closest to the Earth, so it looks a bit bigger than usual (about 7 percent bigger.)  'Blood Moon' refers to the appearence duriing the eclipse as the only light cast on the Moon will be that bent by our atmosphere.  If the parts of the atmosphere doing that are dusty or otherwise polluted, the blue part of the light from the Sun will be scattered and the Moon will turn red.

If you haven't guessed I am an astronomer but hope what I say in my posts makes some sense! image

Well, I'm up but ever so slightly underwhelmed.  The moon just looks darker, not particularly red and my camera's not picking it up at all.  Well done Davidimage.

Your explanation is better than the one I read in the paper Bob, thanksimage.  I'll have another venture out in five minutes and then retire back to bed.
