Just asked Hubby and he's given me the go ahead.

He was late again last night and didn't finish his supper. I'm sure he must be dining elsewhere before coming to us .

They do seem to change their routines as the nights get longer - ours are eating much less food in our garden and Hefty has moved on from his summer quarters behind the ash tree ... that's good as we don't have to move him when the tree is felled. Phew! Much better that he's made his own choice - not sure where he is tho.

  • Good that you can see them

I will only know if food gone as garden is darkness unless comes close and sets the light off
  • ps: would it be best to place feeding box near the home?

i was thinking a distance away, mainly for my benefit that could then see them go for food (security light would come on) and more convenience to me changing the food and not having to go down to bottom of garden in dark and wet etc.

  • so i started on the food house, stupid plastic dont cut but shatters but managed to get there in the end

put within my little growing area

then whilst water at back of my garden i noticed the cat house which is only really used for rainy days has the inside towel messed up.

so i went and had a look and was about to straighten it when a hedgehog back appeared within the towel. so i quickly put it back and left.

this is the cat house, opposite the food station

so i now know one is here often so hopefully will now also find the food.  some beef cat food for now.  ill get some worms also

i presume he is just using for some sleep, i found him just before dusk.  suspect this is not good enough for hibernating so i will move onwards with the house

funny that i was cutting wood earlier and he could easily have been watching me from the cat house

not sure the cats will be that happy

  • still in there asleep at 1030pm i could hear him this time.  moved some food to where he is.  maybe he very late night mover

  • The ones in my garden are active throughout the night.

  • From bedroom window I can see that left the cat house. Not sure if he gone back in

    No food eaten though.
  • yup, he's been out and came back, not really covered himself well

but totally ignored the cat food.

so i presume he likes to sleep here but this wont be good enough if decides to stay for hibernate.

new box being made but i realized the drawer is not solid wood, maybe mdf underneath etc so prob only last 1 winter

  • so he been in there asleep all day again, 2 days im aware of but maybe more often and ive never noticed but now know.  had to cover him up slightly when sun sat on his back.

i have now build an ok ish house, my best effort for now as im sure it would be better than the cat house if he wants to hibernate later.  that is too open and exposed.

just placed near cat house to see if he sees it and takes an interest. to move later.  not sure if i should paint it or stain it etc.  but i am wanting to add a slanted roof one day.

i have left out dried mealworms and some cat biscuits tonight between both homes.

im hoping to later move the food opposite side of the garden and the house put away in corner
