i may have to switch the food then to something that not attract rats as very awkward to feed and then have to go out again to collect, likely past my bedtime due to shifts. i checked at 5am this morning and all still there.
although the cats would prob grab the rats.. prob more field mice or voles as very countryside where i live
maybe i should put the food closer to the house for easier access for winter just will be close to kitchen and cats coming and going and then a walk up garden to home when built
came home the other night and attempted to pull into my drive at back of house in a very dark lit street. saw something move and stop. realized was the hedgehog again so waited for him to walk in front of car and off into my garden.
so he is still visiting although i havent sorted food and house for him yet, but it seems he wants me to.
i have now managed to obtain and old sturdy drawer from a chest of drawers so im thinking of putting a lid on it and creating a hole.
here is my plan, im thinking plan B maybe better, i just want to somehow make it not look like a drawer etc. remove runners from sides but front with handle is larger and would be on the side if do plan B.
I did want a slanted roof but not plausible if using a drawer really. maybe plywood lid and then build a roof on top out of old wood etc
1st to get is a plastic storage box for feeding area.
when do i need to get the house built by for hibernate time?
do they still awake for food or hibernate all winter?
Will read some more and see if I can plan out the house build this weekend. Would be easier if I just go buy wood but trying to keep the costs right down
OH has some big , heavy duty plastic stacking crates. Might I be able to use one of those upside down if I drill some small holes for ventilation? and make an entrance hole, obviously!!

I'd make quite a few large-ish holes along the sides for ventilation - imagine the condensation from several months of breathing whilst Spikey is snuggled in there over the winter - otherwise I don't see why it wouldn't be fine.

I'm no expert , but I understand they can wake during mild periods and go search for food.
Maybe it depends upon your location. eg,, I can't imagine NE Scotland is the same as Cornwall.
Sorry, really tired and about to fall asleep
but you can find lots of info here http://www.hedgehogstreet.org/
Hope that helps

That's the easy bit
