Thank you Nutcutlet and FloBear. I got the idea from 'The A to Z of Gardening' when they showed the ferns. It's down the side of my house which never gets any sun. Got logs from a tree surgeon then bought what I thought was a nice variety of ferns. I wanted to bore out the logs to put ferns in, but couldn't work out how to do it.
This has got as far as F already and I haven't seen it yet because I've been away! Good thread Bev. Forget-me-not is my choice. Perhaps someone else will enter it while I'm still doing the photo!
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

Bev, are those your ferns? Gorgeous! I might have to seek advice about pinching your idea
