Bev, in my last garden in Hampshire I left cannas and dahlias in the ground over the winter, but that was a very light, free ( too free ) draining soil.
Here in Devon , I'd not leave them in, even though I don't live far from Lyn.
I lift them and keep in just covered with dry "compost" in a polytunnel.
Your palm looks like chamaerops humilis to me. Google it and see what you think
Hi Linny89, no problem and thanks for the advice; I'll not leave them in.
@Hostafan, you're right, it is a chamaerops humilis, so thank you very much for that! I've had it for so long and had not a clue what it was until now.
Hostafan1, once my orange nugget is all over and done with, due to its size, I will be digging it out. Unfortunately I don't have the space. Soooooooo the tubar will be looking for a new home. ?? ????
You can have my big orange one if you want it Hosta.
I have probably been lucky over the past 3/4 years with leaving them in and mulching.
all the ones above are from seeds collected from my own plants, which were originally from a pkt of seeds, they don't come true with colours, I am happy with that. I have three big showy ones, the orange, a purple and a really spikey pinky one, they were bought.

Lyn, when you're next here, we must go down the "allotment" and you can pick a couple if you'd like . I'll label them and did them up later for you.
Post was what I had in mind. Shouldn't cost too much if I smile sweetly. LoL.
I just been taking some more pics of it. I'll pop on to laptop
in a sec to upload.
Oh flip, I'd not expect anyone to drive that distance.
Of course I'll cover the postage charge.
Do you like this one Hosta?
